Leavenworth, Washington

In August of 2004, Foundation For Liberty's Founder and President Matt Erickson met with Leavenworth City officials for a Pre-Application conference. Staff denied Erickson's request to fly a 20' X 30' American flag on an 80' flag pole in front of the proposed Foundation headquarters building. Staff stated that such a display may offend others or would otherwise be improper.

Maypole versus the American Flag

The 95' high Bavarian Maypole towers over the 30' high American flag in the park in downtown Leavenworth. The local community group which erected it refers to the maypole as a "towering testament to the devotion of Leavenworth's citizens to its Bavarian character". http://www.projektbayern.com/maibaum.html

The Maypole received "the blessings of the City Council", but four emergency ordinances were enacted to prevent Matt Erickson from erecting his "large, American flag" on a 80' H flagpole, with illumination at night, so it "would not conflict" with or "overwhelm" the City's "Old World Bavarian Design Theme".
